In 1998, Ma Huateng established Tencent, Inc. along with his 4 friends. The money, through which the company had started, came from the profits of his investments in the stock market. In order to keep the firm running, Ma Huateng took care of all the divisions including from that of a janitor to a website designer. Tencent had started its operations from offering e-mail and internet paging services.
In 1999, Ma Huateng launched an internet messaging service called QQ (named OICQ), through which he offered the free download services. More than 5 Million users joined the service in a year.
In 2004, Tencent became the biggest instant messaging service in the country. It received the title of “China’s answer to AOL”. And later in 2007 and 2014, Time magazine called Ma Huateng one of the world’s most influential people.
In 2015, Ma Huateng was entitled with the Innovative CEO of the Year.
Ma Huateng is the founder of Tencent Inc. which is among the largest companies in China.
WeChat, instant mobile messaging application was founded by Ma Huateng in the year 2011.
Ma Huateng had bought a 19,600 square-feet property nestled in woodland between Shek O and Big Wave Bay – in 2009 – and had redeveloped it into a three-storey creation.
Last year, Pony Ma purchased a house with an area of 8,000 square-feet on South Bay Road for Ho Sai-Chu, the chairman of the General Chamber of Commerce, China.
Ma Huateng’s nickname, Pony, comes from his family name, which when translated into English, becomes “horse”.
Post his studies, Ma Huateng worked at various companies like the Shenzhen Runxun Communications Co. Ltd. And the China Motion Telecom Development Ltd. He also served the Internet paging systems and Internet calling systems, in their research and development department.
Ma Huateng introduced a mobile messaging application, WeChat, which had more than 200 Million active users in 2012 and his company controls China’s biggest mobile instant messaging service, and its subsidiaries provide media, entertainment, the internet and the mobile phone value-added services.
He was always passionate of becoming an astronomer since his childhood.
Ma Huateng was awarded Innovative CEO of the Year in the year 2015.
