Dhirubhai Ambani

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani or Dhirubhai Ambani was an Indian industrialist who is widely known as the founder of Indian multinational group of industries, Reliance Industries. He had been featured in the ‘The Sunday Times’ list of top 50 businessmen in Asia.

      Dhirubhai Ambani was born into a modest modh Baniya family in Junagarh, Gujrat. Young Dhirubhai faced all the hardships that a child belonging to a poor family would.

      His father was a humble school teacher while mother stayed at home to look after their five children, of which Dhirajlal or ‘Dhiru’ was the third child. Their father’s meagre income and the insufficiencies of the family were known to ‘Dhiru’ from a very young age.

      Dhirubhai Ambani, with his invincible spirit, began his career by selling ‘Bhajia’ on the weekends. Looking his spirit to work, his elder brother sent him to Aden in Yemen to earn, at the tender age of 16.

      This boy with dreamy eyes and utter will to work hard soon managed to become a distributor from a sheer dispatch clerk and learnt all the major skills like accounting, and bookkeeping, etc.

      Soon after getting hold of the major oil merchandising work in Yemen, he left for India in 1958 with Rs. 50,000, to open Reliance Commercial Corporations, trading spice, followed by making money to open Yarn textiles in the year 1966, the future Reliance Industries.

      His start-up Reliance Textiles became a huge name in Indian market owing to his daring and gutsy decisions. He also launched his first brand “Vimal” in 1969-70, which soon became a successful name in the textile market.

      In 1977, he managed to attract as many as 58,000 investors in Reliance Commercial Corporation.

      His both sons joined the company and initiated various other companies under the Reliance group, like petrochemicals and petroleum refining, etc.

      Dhirubhai Ambani was able to build up Petroleum and Textile Empire with his own ability to identify new business opportunities and an attitude to handle people, intelligently.

      Following his death, the group was divided Reliance India limited headed by Mukesh Ambani, his elder son and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani group headed by Anil Ambani, his younger son.
