Joanne Kathleen Rowling (with pen name, “JK Rowling”) is a British novelist best known for her popular Harry Potter fantasy series. This 50-year old woman is the world’s first millionaire author and one of the world’s wealthiest woman.
JK Rowling was born on July 1965 in Chipping Sodbury in England. She wrote her first book, “Rabbits” at the age of 6, but never published it.
She had difficult teenage years with her mother’s 10-year struggle with multiple sclerosis, until her death in 1991 when Rowling was just 25.
Her marriage to the Portuguese television journalist, Jorge Arantes lasted for only 11 months, resulting in the birth of her daughter, Jessica.
She struggled to raise her child on a weekly welfare check of 70 pounds and living in a mice-infested flat in Edinburgh.
Her first manuscript of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was rejected by 12 publishers including, Penguin, Transworld and HarperCollins.
The complete Harry Potter series have sold more than 450 million copies with a global brand worth an estimated US$ 15 Billion.
By 2000, JK Rowling became the highest-earning woman in Britain with an income of more than 20.5 Million pounds.
In 1998, Warner Brothers purchased the filming rights to her first 2 novels for $ 1.5 Million. With the release of the first film, JK Rowling’s total earnings exceeded $100 Million.
JK Rowling owns a 4.5 Million pound-worth Georgian house in Kensington, London.
In 2013, she was rated as the 13th most influential woman in the UK by the Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio.
